I’ve been cruisin’ WordPress Boulevard on my beater HP . . . the one with a cigarette burn between the 6 and 9 on the numeric pad; enough crumbs in the keyboard to feed a family of four for a week; peeling “Designed for Life” and “Time to Play” stickers; ever expanding dark spot on the display; and DVD tray that flops open at will. Yes . . .
This is my laptop.
There are many others like it, but this one is mine.
My laptop is my best friend.
It is my life.
You cannot imagine how long I’ve been trying to work that into a post. With that done, I can get back to what I was saying. I saw a lot of amazing stuff as I meandered up and down Blog Street. Some of it blew my socks off. Some of it perplexed me. Some of it frightened me. Some of it turned me green with envy. I was enlightened, entertained, educated, enthused and encouraged by what I found. But one site stood out from the crowd and I just can’t stop thinking about it. I can’t find it again either, so I will simple have to recount the story of my amazing discovery.
Now, I understand there are blogs out there raising money for some very noble and deserving causes. I always figured that was why WordPress provided a means to accept donations through PayPal. It never occurred to me that anyone would actual use the tool in quite the way this blogger did. Believe me, I scoured the site for any hint of a charitable connection. This whiz kid must have thought they had been “Freshly Pressed” based on the hit count I generated in their stats. I left no post unread, no page unscanned, no link unclicked. I was meticulous in my examination.
There was but one conclusion I could make. This yahoo wanted my money for no reason other than the magnificence of their blog. I know we all think our little piece of blogostate has value beyond measure. Many of us would love nothing more than to win the blog lottery and get published, even – dare I say it – paid for our brilliance. We rejoice when someone appreciates our work enough to leave a comment. We celebrate when the number of visitors increases. We do little happy dances in our PJs when we triumphantly reach each new milestone. Well, I do anyway.
I have not before seen or heard of anybody with the audacity to solicit funds based strictly on the breathtaking splendor of their electronic wonderfulness. I don’t know if this WordPress wunderkind is a genius or a moron. Has anyone, prior to myself that is, ever clinked on that Donate/Paypal icon? I did have to chuckle as little blogger buddy had been thoughtful enough to fill in the “purpose” portion of the screen with their blog’s moniker. I wonder if you can take a tax deduction for such a donation?
Well, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Still . . . simpleton or brainiac? Perhaps there’s money to be made. Would my legion(sic) of followers pay for the awesomeness of my blog? You did read the part about the decrepitude of my laptop, right?

I was thinking about this just yesterday. I know a few bloggers who have a donation form, and I always wonder if anybody ever sends them money.
Even without the donations, I hope your laptop keeps humming.

I guess I lead a sheltered life. I never saw it before. It just seems wrong somehow. Blog panhandling.
Thanks for dropping by.

Oh WOW. Really, super thank you for reading and commenting. I just realized who you are . . . a bit of a WordPress celeb. I’m doubly honored as I know your time is at a premium.

In this economy, I feel like you can’t blame people for trying to get a bit extra pocket change. It’s not like a forced donation or anything. I wouldn’t put one on my blog because I think it’s super cheesy, but I can see where they are coming from.

Oh, I get it. I also get why people panhandle. I still get that “Danger, danger! Will Robinson” feeling though.
I also agree. There is a incredibly-high degree of cheese factor that goes with it.

This is SO genius. Why you didn’t leave a link? What is the name of his site?

To be honest, it was a she. I thought it better to stay gender neutral, but as I said . . . I can’t find the site now.
Sorry.

Excellent writing thoroughly enjoyed your post and I too do a happy dance in my p.j.’S with the passage of every milestone. Every day I click on my stats button and expect a drum roll, I try not to let my WordPress stats define my mood but dang its like a drug, at first having “a” visitor was thrilling now I want more!! More! hundreds!! thousands of visitors; but no matter how big I get I will never charge people for the privilege of visiting my site.
But on 2nd thought; what if some generous sole decides he is going to perform a random act of kindness and give his fortune to the next person that makes him smile and that person happens to be me and because I’m not set up with pay pal he passes me by and clicks on this kids blog site, instead, he’s got pay pal and gets all my money!
It could happen!

It is addictive isn’t it. I’ve tried to stay away from the stats and tell myself, “Self, its doesn’t matter.” Then I go look anyway.
You say . . . hundreds? thousands? I think I’d have a heart attack. Oh, don’t get me wrong, it would be faaaaaaaaabulous.
Thanks for stopping in, but you can’t have the money . . . its mine!

I know what you mean about the addictive nature of reading one’s stats. And happy dancing in my PJ’s? we could have a dance troupe.

Love the dry humor of your blog…and I’ve never donated, nor have I ever noticed a place in which to donate. I’ll be looking now though. Thanks!

Well, actually, it is a bit crafty. The blogger is honest about where the money is going – not a scam. I’m okay with it! If you don’t want to donate, don’t; but if you do, LUCKY HIM/HER!
Enjoyed your blog. Wish you could remember that page address though!

Bronxboy55 (above) said he knows a few people doing it, so maybe its not so hard to find one set up that way.
I, in the mean time, would be happy to “hold” and donations anyone would like to make. 😉
Just send an e-mail to the address on the about page and arrangements can be made. LOL

Very interesting MDR,
Maybe he gets a few dollars here and there…you know what they say, if you don’t ask, you don’t get. 😉
Most Bloggers say they write for themselves but if it were true, they would open Word, Writer or any other word processing application and type their thoughts for their eyes only.
Let’s all be honest, we like to be recognised and we ‘really appreciate’ our visitors take the time to share their thoughts on any of our posts…I know I do.
I hope that Laptop survives until you get that replacement…,who knows…you may receive a few donations or even a donated laptop.

I have long said just that . . . “if you don’t ask, you don’t get.” Maybe I just don’t ask enough, but then it has always seemed a bit greedy to ask for more than you need. Seems to be a big part of what’s wrong these days.
Me and the laptop have an agreement. Its allowed random shutdowns when it is tired or overheated so long as it starts back up after having a rest. Its worked so far.
October 25, 2011 at 5:04 pm
Phil's Lounge
Very true…but you don’t seem the greedy type.
I hope it sticks to the agreement, if not, we’ll all have to have raise some funds…got to keep you blogging. 😉

I’ve seen a couple that say something like, “If you like what you see, buy me a cup of coffee,” or something like that. I did see one that seemed more demanding, but I can’t remember much about it…except that I immediately moved on.
To be honest, I’ve considered it. I’ve thought about having a “Donate to Project 2268 (me getting back to CA to be with my daughter)” tab, but even that doesn’t seem right to me. At this point my hit count and the comments I do receive are satisfying enough.
I always tell my fervent readers that they’re reading the first draft of my book, and that this first draft is free but when I get my book published they’ll have to buy it – but who am I kidding? I’ll end up giving copies away to people like you who have supported me.
Anyway, I think you need to send me this dude’s link so I can mock him mercilessly.
May all of our laptops live forever, Joe

Good to see you, Joe. You were being just a little too quiet. I’d donate to Project 2268, but I doubt what I have will get you to the bus stop. I do want a copy of the book though.
Why does everybody want the link? Oh yeah, mocking. 🙂
Be safe.

Absolutely. I’d be happy to lighten some fat cat’s burden by taking some of that heavy cash off his hands, but I can’t imagine who has the disposable income to give money to some unknown blogger.
Thank you for the compliment, good sir. Heady words from a master.

Well, be it with donations or a store, I’ve seen plenty of bloggers and webcomic artists make a living off it, and I know for a fact that people indeed make donations… not sure if I’ve seen it in WordPress, though, but it’s definitely quite common.
I even saw a cartoonist ask for donations to get a new tablet, and truth be told he absolutely deserved it (and got it).
October 25, 2011 at 5:33 am
Miss Demure Restraint
Well, I’ll be . . . I don’t know what I’ll be. Maybe I need to rethink this donation thing and then I’ll be able to pay my bills. Now where are these people making a living of their blogs? I NEED to learn how that works.
Welcome BW. Hope things are working out with your monitor. 😉

Edible Dirt and Space Avalanche have donation buttons. Bigger (more popular) blogs and comics usually have stores, though, as a way to give back for the donations, like Hyperbole and a Half.
Comic artists usually sell signed prints and t-shirts, like xkcd and Questionable Content (both those guys live off their comics). Some bloggers and cartoonists get published and they sell compilations of their work (or interesting new stuff like the guy form A Softer World).
About my monitor, I’m about to try something drastic. Stay tuned.

Hmmm. .. maybe I should ask for donations too. My chances of recieving them may be very slim, but it couldn’t hurt to ask. Or could it.
Loving your writings here and so glad you found your way to my little place in space.
Hang in there, I just heard computers/laptops are going to be super cheap around Christmas time this year. Maybe you could vie for a few donations to that end. Keri

Thank you, Keri. I love the name of your blog . . . Always Curtsy When You Sneeze . . . How cute is that?
I’m beginning to think we all need to add a “donate button,” sit back and rack in the dough. I may need to develop content more likely to attract wealthy philanthropists. I should work on that.
Thanks again for stopping by.

I’ve always been surprised more people don’t host online order forms for pizza delivery. Shouldn’t there be a big button at the top of every blog for ordering a pizza? And if the blogger got a cut of that, think about the possibilities! Of course, it would probably help if the blog was about pizza too. I’m at a loss there. I don’t mention pizza much, and neither do you. Yes, to do this, your blog would need a “pizza” theme.

To each, his own. I’ve never considered using my blog to ask for donations or post ads. It’s not something I want to be a part of my cyberspace writing experience. I think of a blog to be a piece of art, so I guess it’s fair for an artist to reach out for donations when creating art in a public space. It’s akin to a sidewalk performer setting up a bucket for cash.
Although I’m open to the idea, I’d never consider it. I think of my blogging experience as an opportunity to join a community of writers, virtually. I’m happy to learn a few things from others, share my thoughts and engage in positive discussions.

I have never seen anyone doing this but now that you have opened the Tomb of Skeletons perhaps this could be something worth looking into, for instance I could adapt a gruesome turnstile for would be readers of my Scripts to go through and if they don’t pay on the way out then they are simply catapulted into the pit of hell, or maybe I could leave some Werewolves lurking around the graveyard just waiting to bite an absconder should he or she wish to run off without contributing, I mean nobody can leave my realm without paying in some way 🙂 lol
As for your aging laptop I think that we could organise a Zombie Raffle where all the Girls, I mean all the Ghouls leave a body part from one of their nocturnal hunting trips, you know a sort of ‘Build a Monster’ and win a new laptop kind of thing? 🙂 Well I only said 🙂 lol
Seriously though, that opportunist that you mentioned must have a huge chip on his / her shoulder to expect someone to offer a donation just for a quick look on a Space, still I guess those crazy ideas are the money spinners of tomorrow as they say in entrepreneur land, but personally I think that I will give it a miss 🙂 lol

Maybe it pays the internet bill.
Do you think you could hook me up with one of those catapults to the pit of hell. I have a couple of . . . shall we say . . . . past associates I’d like to arrange a one-way trip for.
The old HP has made it this far. With luck there is a fabulous job for me just around the next corner and HP will graceful retire when I can afford a shiny new laptop. I’m thinking positive thoughts.
Thanks for all of your support.

All this is really interesting, because as a working (and self-supporting) artist, it really cheeses me off when people think I should just give my work away….but still, I’ve never charged (or had the nerve) to charge people just to LOOK at my work. I’m not totally horrified at the idea of a “donate” button, but I think you would have to have pretty high quality and high (way higher than I have) readership to pull it off. Writing is different, because there’s not just one object that a person could own. It’s out there to be read by any bozo passing by. Well, unless we give up our laptops and burn all the presses.
I started my blog because I wanted to see if anyone besides my close personal friends would think that the panda cartoons were funny. (My friends HAVE to think the pandas are funny because I would get very cranky if they didn’t and I’d make their lives hell.) I do the happy PJ dance every time someone tells me they like what I’m doing… Maybe that’s not enough for the long haul, but it’s where we start. If enough people discover us and like what we do, maybe a book deal will come. who knows? All I really know is panda satire has saved my sanity in the days of lousy painting sales.
Your blog is great, your writing is wonderful. It makes me laugh and that’s worth a lot. Of course painting sales still suck, so even if you did have a donate button, I’m not able to do that right now, but if I could I would.

I love the Pandas. Don’t ever stop creating the Pandas. I haven’t seen your painting, but back in the day when I had a good job and money, I purchased quite a few pieces by local artist. Four I picked up at Sister’s Restaurant in Everett. I don’t know if they still do it, but they used to showcase different artist each month. You must be good, ’cause know several artists in the area that aren’t supporting themselves.
It makes me soooooooo happy that people are reading and commenting on this blog. It is a labor of love. Thank you.

While we really can’t know what the future holds, I’ll keep making panda cartoons till the ideas run out. Thank you for liking them. They are a true labor of love. Fine art is just my day job. (ha ha) (Of course I would not turn down a book contract for them, and perhaps a nice advance against royalties.)

I’ll put in your request along with mine. I’d like to syndicate. You know a Dear Abbey kind of deal only without the advice. Wait, that would mean I’d need a time machine too so I could transported back to the day when there were several newspapers in each major metropolis and people read them as much for entertainment as news. Sans time machine, I’m with you . . . until the ideas run out.
